Hey guys, Eme here!
Really and truly Lagos has been so hectic. I have sat down
on numerous occasions contemplating why I should be this tired on vacation. But
then again, is Lagos really Lagos without the stress?
This weekend I decided to throw away all my scholarly
responsibilities and go check out Rele Gallery with a friend (shout out to Roe).
Ngl I found out about this place through Instagram. The front of the building
is legit SUCH a photo op.
It’s a cute little gallery, v. adorable. Unfortunately, we were only allowed to view one
section of it as there was an important meeting in the other which we
couldn’t interrupt :( . Nevertheless, I
was more than satisfied with the little we did see. The exhibition was a series
of paintings by Sam Ebohon titled Open Secrets.
In his paintings, he uses a combination of confident linear brushstrokes
and bold palettes. At first gaze the pieces appear to be mere abstraction with
geometric shapes ultimately cooperating to form a figure/ image- something
quite akin to the cubist movement in my opinion. Upon closer study, it is
evident that the artist has introduced words/phrases into the piece- a combination of words which seem to have some sort of underlying message relating to the figure/image depicted.
Through these works, Ebohon expresses that life is full of
ciphers which will only be revealed to those who take the trouble to unearth
them and see their connections to other results and happenings.(quoted from Thisdaylive.com).
