5 ILLUSTRATORS FROM AN ILLUSTRATOR

So this week we thought it would be interesting to get a creative to list 5 people they like/ admire in their field. It's a nice way to introduce you (and us) to some artists we might not have been aware of- and who knows it might turn into an interesting segment on the blog?

I sat down with illustrator Subqulture aka Desola Kazeem who recently has taken to instagram to showcase her digital illustrations. Since the last time we interviewed her, her style has evolved immensely and although her following is modest, she has received compliments from the likes of Lilly Allen, Nadia rose and Munroe Bergdorf. I was interested to see some of the illustrators she admired within the instagram sphere and why. Without further a due, here are the 5:

1. AILIE BANKS
"...because she uses pink pastel backgrounds- millennial pink to be exact. Each of her illustrations touches on an aspect of femininity in 2018. The subject of her pieces also have a "Banji"/ New York millennial aesthetic which is quite cool.  I also love the fact that she has a wobbly styled hand in her drawings"

2.  BOBBY TRAUMA
"...because he has a post apocalyptic, grunge, comic book style aesthetic to his illustrations that I have never seen before. He's unique- and also Nigerian. It's also interesting that all his characters seem to be set in some sort of desert wasteland"

3. EMZ DRAWINGS
"...because she illustrates all the black and brown women who influence our style on the internet- and she has a very urban, very Princess Nokia meets Katy V aesthetic."

4. SLNTBOI
"...because he's one of my fave drag illustrators. I like the way he uses slabs of single colors, which is how I tend to start some of my own illustrations."

5. YU XIANG (HYPER CAUSTIC)
"...because life drawing was the only useful part of my (very limited) art education. You can tell he is actually drawing figures from real life in his pieces. I also like the fact that he chooses from a very limited shade range. This is how i would probably draw if I was great"
